May, 2008
The research cell of Bangladesh Centre for Development, Journalism and Communication (BCDJC) revealed that at least seven incidents of life threat, harassment and physical assaults happened during the month of May 2008.
Off these incidents, two journalists were given death threat in separate incidents, one received threat in another incident, one was physically assaulted and another one was harassed. However, no report of causalities, murder and arrest was reported during the month.

Threat:
On May 9, a gang of organized drug dealers threatened journalist Shiekh Ali of Monthly Bikrom Pur. While Ramzan Ali, leader of the gang was arrested; Shiekh Ali published the news in Monthly Bikrom Pur. Following the report, the miscreants threatened him.

Death Threat:
On May 5, son and daughter of a police constable threatened to kill Guljar Hossain, Mushiganj district correspondent of The Daily Destiny for publishing a report of their criminal activities. Police constable Abdul Hanna’s son Sumon attacked on Jahangir Alam, a rickshaw puller of North Islam Pur of the town on May 4. They also tortured his pregnant wife- Moina while she came to rescue her husband. After the incident, Guljar published a report and received the threat from the culprits. Journalist Guljar Hossain lodged a general diary with the concerned police station in connection with the incident. 

On May 27, Bhabotosh Chakrabarti Manik, a veteran journalist of Jamal Pur and President of Islam Pur Reporters Unity received death threat after publishing reports on corruption of a local Union Parishad Chairman. Joynal Abedin, the local UP Chairman threatened him while the journalist wrote news against his corruption that was published in The Daily Ajker Jamal Pur on May 26. UP Chairman Joinal threatened him to kill in front of local journalists. However, Manik lodged a general diary with Islam Pur police station seeking safety of his life.

Attack/ Physical Assault:
On May 11, Shaidul Hoque Khan Dablu, Vice President of Dohar Press Club and Dohar-Nobab Ganj correspondent of The Daily Bhorer Kagoj was injured critically while miscreants attacked him during an official assignment. The miscreants led by one Rana also looted cash amounting Taka 20 thousand and valuable documents from the journalist. A case was filed with Nobabganj Police station but police failed to arrest none of the culprits.  

Harassment:
On May 4, the syndicate of Jagannath University has suspended the studentship of Khairul Hossain Raju, Staff Correspondent of The Daily Samokal for three years for writing two reports against the Jamaat leaning teachers under the headline of “Secret meeting of Jammat leaning teachers” and “Conspiracy to establish Jamaat-Shibir in Jagannath University in the name of movement” in the daily Samakal. The reports were published as Samakla Report and the newspaper hide the name of concerned reporter. Without giving any kind of self-defense of the reporter cum student of Jagannath University, the authority has taken the decision.

On May 8, Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University (RU) imposed some bars for the working journalists in the university. A total of 22 rules were imposed for the journalists giving the direction and primary concept of journalism.

On May 10, the working journalists of Rajshahi University (RU) was accused of corruption by Md. Jaidur Rahman, Acting Estate Officer of the university while the journalists entered into his room and didn’t addressed him as ‘Sir’. The journalists alleged that she accused the RU journalists to hide his own crime.
