A total number of 17 journalists were assaulted or harassed in 11 different incidents across the country in August 2008. The research cell of Bangladesh Centre for Development, Journalism and Communication (BCDJC) revealed the data following the newspapers monitoring and field level investigation. During the period one journalist was harassed by the miscreants, three journalists came under attack in three incidents, two cases were filed implicating six journalists while seven were arrested in five incidents. However, no report of casualties or murder was reported during the month.

Attack/ Physical Assault:
On August 13, four Chhatra League (BCL) activists assaulted a journalist in front of Aparajeyo Bangla at the Dhaka University campus. The victim Shafiqul Islam, DU Correspondent of the Daily Janata, was attacked while covering a BCL programme calling for the unconditional release of their leader Shekh Hasina. According to the eyewitness, the BCL activists who assaulted the journalist were identified as Mithu, Raihan, Mehedi and Jewel. All of them are the residents of Zuhurul Haque Hall of the university.

On August 15, Samiul Islam Sani, Patgram (Lalmonirhat) Correspondent of the daily Sangbad was attack by the terrorists for publishing a report. According to the sources, a gang of drug dealer led by Robaet Kabir Rony, and his accomplice Raihan Ahmed attacked on Sani when he was going to cover the national mourning day at Patgram Public Club at the night of August 15. The journalist was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. Police yet to arrest none of the culprits who attacked on Sani.

On August 18, miscreants attacked on Rafiqul Islam, Fulpur correspondent of the daily Bhorer Kagoj for publishing report against the miscreants. However, police did not arrest any one in connection with the incident.

On August 7, police arrested two journalists on charge of extortion from Khagrachari town. The arrested were identified as Md. Zakir Hossain of Daily Desh Janata and Mongshapru Marma of daily Bhorer Kagoj. However, no case was filed with the concerned police station in this connection.

On August 7, the members of joint force arrested Humayun Kabir Shelim, Netrokona Correspondent of RTV, a private television channel on charge of extortion from Netrokona town.

On August 10, police arrested two journalists on Jamalpur district. The arrested were identified as Rubel Mia and Shohag Mia. They are working for weekly Bichitra.

On August 16, police arrested Fazlul Hoque Roman, Netrokona Correspondent of the daily Naya Diganta on charge of extortion. Jaglul Mahmud, owner of Lions Eye Care Centre and Hospital of Netrokona filed a case against the journalist while he published reports on irregularities of the hospital.

On August 17, Mohiuddin Jwel, Chittagong University Correspondent of daily Prothom Alo and Sudipto Shorma of Jugantor were critically injured, the activists of Chhatra Shibir attacked on him during a clash between Shibir and Chhatra League at Chittagong University campus.

Legal notice:
On August 1, a case was filed against five journalists of the daily Janata for publishing false and fabricated news. The accused were identified as Sayed M Anwar Hossain, Khandokar Mohitul Islam, M Anwar Ullah, Md. Mostafa Jamil and Nazim Baki Ullah.

On August 13, Manager of Bangladesh Krishi Bank, Chiringa branch issued legal notice to Choton Kanti Nath, Chokoria correspondent of daily Amader Shomoy for publishing a report on the irregularities and corruption of the bank official.

On August 15, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) harassed Tarun Sarkar, a senior reporter of the daily Jai Jai Din while he went at the BIWTC office at Sadarghatka for taking an interview of its Chairman. The protocol officers of BIWTC chairman, Zaved and some of his accomplices attacked him.
