AT A GLANCE

July, 2009
A total of 19 journalists were physically assaulted or attacked, received death threat and threat, and harassed in 16 different incidents across the country in July 2009. During the period eight journalists came under attack or physically assaulted in seven incidents, four were taken threat, five cases were filed implicating seven journalists. A journalist was sentenced to prison for seven years. There is no harassment and abduction report in this month but a report of murder was reported during this month. Nurul Islam alias Rana (24), a staff reporter of fortnightly Muktamon, was killed by a gang of unidentified criminals in Tongi. In this year this was the first murder of a youth journalist. 

Death:
On July 03, Nurul Islam alias Rana (24), a staff reporter of fortnightly Muktamon published from Uttara Sector-7, was killed by a gang of unidentified criminals in Tongi. He was returning to his residence after attending his office. The criminals beat him very badly with hockey sticks and bamboo and fled away. He has taken to RMC hospital and doctors declared him dead.

Death threat/ Threat:
On July 1, Kazi Jesin, the anchor of Banglavision Television’s programme ‘Point Of Order’, had received a death threat for ‘anti-Islamic’ activities. She files a General Diary (GD) with the Mohammadpur thana in this connection.

On July 8, Jahedul Haque Sarder, Badarganj district correspondent of the daily Bangladesh Shomoy and member of Badarganj Press Club, was received threatened from SI Anwer Hossain due to collect information from Badarganj thana in Faridpur.

On July 16, Belayet Hossain Bachchu, senior co-secretary of Ramganj Press Club and daily Jaijaidin correspondent, was taken death threatened from Abdul Mannan through mobile phone in Lakhkhipur. Abdul Mannan also used slang wards with him.

On July 25, Chatter Ali Sohel, general secretary of the Rupganj Press Club and daily Manab Jomin correspondent, was received death threatened to cut nerve of hand and leg from a local terrorists due to publish report about grab land, drug business, extortion and terrorism in Rupganj.

Case/ Legal Notice:
On July 6, an extortion case was filed against Nazim Bakaul, district correspondent of the daily Inquilab in Faridpur due to publish a report against police. Police had given death threat through mobile phone. Nazim filed a general dairy with Faridpur thana in this connection.

On July 16, Shahidul Islam Akash, general secretary of Ghoraghat district Press Club and district correspondent of the Bhorer Kagoj, was fallen in trap of false extortion case. Akash ran away from police.

On July 23, Mohammad Nur Ali, managing director of Unique group, filed a case against daily Jugantor to published false report. He claims Jugantor newspaper to apologies to him.

On July 20, Awami League (AL) general secretary Md. Abu Taher filed a Tk. 100 crore defamatory case against three journalists due to publish false report. The victims were chief editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, editor and publisher Mahbuba Chowdhury and staff reporter Lutfar Rahman, of the daily Manabjamin. This case filed with Lakhkhipur chief Judicial Magistrate court.

On July 28, Rashidun Nabi, a staff reporter of the Weekly Purnamatra published from Narayanganj, has been implicated in a criminal case for covering a series of crime reports on a woman repression. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) were identified him among four others who were also implicated in the case.

Arrest/ Jail:
On July 25, Raihan Alam, district correspondent of ATN Bangla, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in an extortion case.

Attack/ Physical assault:
On July 13, Anwar Ali Himu, staff correspondent of The Daily Star, was attacked by a gang of criminals at Asam Colony in Rajshahi city. They stormed into Himu's resident and beat up him vary badly and his two family members mercilessly and also they tried to fire his motorbike, leaving them injured. He filed a general dairy (GD) with Boalia Police Station in this connection.

On July 13, armed terrorists were attacked village of Nachhir Uddin Shoyeb, staff reporter of the daily Amar Desh in Jhalakati district. Father mother of the journalist were severely injured due to attacked of terrorists. Police were investigated on this connection.

On July 27, Selim Sarder, correspondent of the daily Samakal and editor of Shaptahik Eshordir, was physically assaulted by some local Awami League activists and Jubo League leaders. Selim published a report against those local Awami League activists and Jubo League leaders. He filed a general dairy (GD) against four people with Eshordir thana in this connection.

On July 29, Hayatuzzaman Miraj, Barisal Barta correspondent, was attacked by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) cadres in Amtali upazila town at around 2:30pm for publishing a report against them. Local journalists condemned the attack on Miraj and filed written complaints with the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and the officer-in-charge (OC) of Amtali Thana demanding punishment to the BCL cadres.

On July 29, Firoz Mustafa, correspondent of the daily local Banglar Boney at BTI (Barisal Taztile Institute), and Rafeyatul Islam, correspondent of the daily local Satya Sangbad at the same institute, were assaulted by some Drug peddlers. No case was filed with Barisal Koywali Polish Station in this connection with the attack as of filing of the report.

On July 29, Chhatra League activists attacked Hayatujjaman Miraj, general editor of Amtali Reporters' Unity, daily Barishal Barta and correspondent of News Agency in Barguna upazila. They had beaten him very badly, and had taken to Amtali Sadar hospital.

On July 29, Khairul Islam, Sonargoan correspondent of the daily Dinkal, was attacked by some terrorists at around 11 pm while he was returning home. He filed a case against five terrorists with Sonargon thana in this connection.

Others:
On July 07, a private TV channel 'Baishakhi' received bomb threat from an unknown phone call at around 12:40pm. According to a correspondent of the channel, a bomb was planted in the Sonali Bank branch, located on the ground floor of the building where the TV channel was located. The employees of the bank and the TV channel became panicky after the phone call.  

International:
On July 01, the biggest US newspaper chain, Gannett, which owns USA, will eliminate more than 1,000 jobs at its local newspapers, the Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition. The job cuts will offset a continuing decline in revenues, the journal said.

On July 27, Godofredo Linao (49), a radio broadcaster and also worked as a political aide, was gunned down by two men while riding his motorcycle in Barobo town on the southern island of Mindanao in Philippine.

On July 30, Juan Daniel Martinez (48), newscaster for W Radio who covered a wide range of local issues, including crime in Mexican, was found beaten, gagged and partially buried the resort city of Acapulco. Body was found in a clandestine grave in an empty. Police named no suspects or possible motive.
