AT A GLANCE

September, 2009
A total of 20 journalists became the victim of threat or death threat, harassment, and physical assaults or attacked and received legal notice in 12 different incidents during the month of September 2009. Of these, four journalists were assaulted physically in four separate incidents, five journalists given threat or death threat in separate incidents. However, no report of casualties or murder was reported during the month.

Death threat/ Threat:
On September 09, MA Bachhit, correspondent of Nabiganj, was received death threat on mobile phone from Saiful Jahan Chowdhury, join secretary of Awami League. A general dairy was filed against Saiful Jahan on 11 September in this connection.

On September 13, Shofkat Hossain, Bashkhali correspondent of the daily Inquilab, was taken death threatened by some local terrorists through mobile phone due to published report against them in Chittagang. Shofkat Hossain filed a general diary with Bashkhali thana in this connection.

On September 13, S Mizanur Islam, correspondent of daily Inquilab and former correspondetn of the daily Ajker Barta, and former secretary of Banaripara Press Club, was received death threat from a terrorist Mizanur Rahman Mintu in Barisal, due to published report against him. Mizanur Islam was filed a general dairy (GD) with Banaripara Thana.

On September 17, Samsuzzaman Shaheen, Khulna correspondent of the daily Prothom Alo, was taken death threat from Awami League MP Noni Gopal due to publishing a report. An unidentified person called him and given threat over mobile phone. Shaheen filed a general dairy with Khulna Thana in this connection.

On September 24, Abu Zafar Jabbar, acting editor of the Shaptahik Bananchol published from Sarankhola district and freedom fighter, was taken death threatened from Jalal Ahmmed known as Jalal Mohri at around 11am. Jalal also harassed Jabbar in front of the local people and also used slung words to him. Jabbar felt life insecurity because of death threat.

Case/ Legal Notice:
On September 08, Moslem Boyati was filed a case against two correspondents. The victims are Israt Hassain Lipton, Golachipa correspondent of daily Prothom Alo, and Saimun Rahman Alit, correspondent of the daily Amar Desh. But investigation is still incomplete.

On September 09, Mufti Salahuddin of RTV and Samakal, Abu Taher Bappa of Bangla vision, Sankar Lal Das of the Daily Prothom Alo and ABC Radio, Khondokar Delwar Jalali of Channel 1, Hanjala Shihab of Digonta TV, Abu Zafar Khan of Manav Jamin, have been absconding from home to avoid attack by cronies of local lawmaker and police harassment in connection with three false cases at Galachipa upazila town in Patuakhali. Journalists were doing their professional duty. The victims and local sources said a group of BCL men became aggrieved following reports on grabbing of a large portion of the River Galachipa and other government lands by local Awami League lawmaker Golam Mawla Rony and his associates.

On September 29, two businessmen Sawkat Ali Khan and Hayder Ali Khan were filed a defamatory case against three journalists due to publish a false and defeated report. The victims were Maynul Hossain, former advisor and barrister of the daily Ittefaq, editor Rahat Khan, publisher Saju Hossain and staff reporter Jamiul Ahsan Shipu, of the newspaper.

Attack/ Physical assault:
On September 4, Shahinur Kibria Masud, Boyalkhali correspondent of the daily Samakal, was attacked by Awami League (AL) leader Rezaul Karim Babul infront of the district press club. He was attacked by Rezaul for publishing a report against him. Rezaul also used slung words and kicked his all body. Injured had been admitted to district health care by the help of some local people.

On September 10, Hasan Chowdhury (26), Computer-in-charge of the daily Fulki, was shot and wounded by some unidentified miscreants while he was sleeping in the office at about 6:30 am in Savar. As he was very critical, has taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). RAB and police visited the spot. A case was filed in this connection.

On September 11, Faysal Mahmud, district correspondent of the daily Naya Diganta, was severely injured by unidentified miscreants in Sylhet. He has been sent to Osmani Medical College Hospital. Police were suspected that this happened while journalist was doing his professional duty.

On September 13, some terrorists attacked Ahmed Ali Shahin, correspondent of the daily Jaijaidin. He was injured very severely. He was going to file a case against the terrorist but police didn't take his complain. On the other hand, terrorist filed a false extortion case against Shahin. Terrorist also snatched cash and camera from him.
