AT A GLANCE

December, 2009
A total of 11 journalists were assaulted or harassed in seven different incidents across the country in December 2009. During the period journalists came under attack in four incidents, a case was filed implicating three journalists of same daily newspaper; miscreants abducted two journalists for money. However, no report of casualties or murder was reported during the month.

Case/ Legal Notice:
On December 24, the Khulna district’s Jubo League president, Kamruzzaman Jamal, lodged a TK.10,000 crore defamation case against the Editor Mahmudur Rahman, publisher Hashmat Ali, and the concerned reporter M Abdullah of the Daily Amar Desh for publishing a false report that allegedly defamed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajid Wazed Joy and the president government. Judge Md Barequzzaman of the court accepted the case and issued summons to the accused persons, ordering them to be present in the court on January 24, according to the source.

Attack/ Physical assault:
On December 19, M Abdullah, special correspondent of the daily Amar Desh, was came under attacked near Army stadium at Banani while he was going to his daily’s office at Karwan Bazar. The criminal attacked his car. He was injured and save own life left the car and reach at office by running.

On December 20, Saiful Islam Jewel, the DU correspondent of UNB, and Shahiduzzaman, feature writer of Bdnews24.com, were injured in an attack by some activists of Chhatra League, the associate organization of the ruling Awami League, at Curzon Hall of DU, in a sequel to the beating of a Shibir-affiliated student. Both were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. A case filed in this connection.

On December 24, Jabayedul Hasan, Dumki upazila correspondent of the regional daily Banglar Bane, was physically assaulted, while performing his professional duty by a group of students of Patuakhali Science and Technology University. The attackers had beaten him very severely. They also snatched digital camera, cash money and gold chain from him.

On December 26, Kamal Hossain, Barbazar correspondent of the daily Gramer Kagoj, was attacked by some local terrorists for publishing report on anti-drug in Barbazar district in Zinaidah. Terrorists of 7/8 members were entered his business organization and beaten him very severely. Then Kamal had been taken to Kaliganj hospital. A case was filed with Kaliganj thana in this connection.

Abduction:
On December 6, Abdul Jabbar, Putiya correspondent of the daily Amar Desh, was abducted for publishing a report against Jubo League activists. He was abducted at around 6:30pm while he was doing his professional duty, according to the witnesses. Jabbar was mobile his family and said Jubo League activist captured me. Then his family member found that his phone had been switched off. After that his family member were filed a general dairy (GD) with Putiya thana in this connection.

On December 13, Rafiqul Islam, Chowgachha correspondent of the daily Probarton published from Khulna, was abducted for money. Some unidentified gunmen captured him from Jessore while he was returning to his residence at around 10:30am. After captured him they mobile victim’s Sister Ranu Begam and want rescue money one lakh 50 thousand taka. A complains was filed with Kotoyali thana in this connection.

Others:
On December 16, four bombs were hurled at the house of Benjir Ahmed Benu, district correspondent of ATN Bangla at Shibbagh in Narsingdi. According to the witnesses, the bombs exploded with big sounds and electric cable caught fire, creating panic among the inmates and neighbors. A case was filed in connection with the bomb attack.
